Smart Ways to Save Money

Free Internet Protection

There are some very effective free Internet protection ideas and computer virus information available and you are about to have some of the best for yourself. As a personal financial coach and unofficial computer guy, I notice that many people do not look to their own computer for savings.

Using what you are about to learn are some of the best ways to save money and help to protect your family.

The Internet is an incredible vast wealth of information on every conceivable topic. Unfortunately, like any large city, there is a shady red light district side.

Pornography wreaks an incredible destruction on families. Viruses, trojan horses, malware, worms, and many other deadly characters wreak their own destruction to your computer files and the very system itself.

Have you or your family been affected by the dark side of the Internet? Tell your story in the comment section below.

Remember the Melissa virus more than a decade ago? Wiped out a hard drive in seconds; yep, got mine. Well, my computer has had no virus problems since; nor yours if you avail yourself and take action with this valuable computer virus information available in this two part report.

For now, you are going to learn two very important free Internet protection steps I use that you can implement today.

Internet Filtering

It is time to say goodbye to pornography and other destructive sites. Do not get me started on Internet porn statistics. I might be liable to throw a few things. I am here to help you keep it away and add some effective parent and, unfortunately in too many circumstances, husband control.

The problem is the vast majority of Internet filters available today are very left leaning in their filtering system. They block Focus on the Family but think it is OK for your children to view soft porn and gay agenda sites.

Of all the free internet protection ideas out there, I believe the most effective is K9 Web Protection. It is very easy to install. You set the controls for what type of sites get filtered and relax.

Well, almost. Unfortunately, no filtering system is 100% effective 100% of the time, even this free Internet protection software.

New trash sites constantly pop up and it may take a day or two (or longer) for the filter to catch it. Just remember that whatever you use, keep it updated!

For complete peace of mind, never let the children use the computer out of your sight. Move the computer if you have to, but keep it in a place where you can see what they are doing.

My children have asked me a few times to type in the password for access to a site that was blocked by K9. Some I do and some I do not. Trust but verify.

OK, I will give you one blood boiling statistic. According to a 2000 Time/CNN poll, "44 percent of children polled have visited x-rated sites or sites with sexual content. Moreover, 43 percent of children said they do not have rules about Internet use in their homes." I personally believe this to be much higher.

Set some rules, avail yourself of this free Internet protection, and protect your family!

Let us now turn our attention to another of my free internet protection ideas you should implement, if not already.

Turn on that Firewall

According to NetSecurity, “A firewall is basically the first line of defense for your network. The basic purpose of a firewall is to keep uninvited guests from browsing your network.

"A firewall can be a hardware device or a software application and generally is placed at the perimeter of the network to act as the gatekeeper for all incoming and outgoing traffic.”

Think about it as having America's finest helping to protect your information.

Even a mediocre hacker can gain access to your pictures, financial information, etc., and even place their data on your computer! A firewall helps to keep unwanted intruders out. Now that I think about that, is an intruder ever wanted?

This is a firewall software program that is part of Windows already. However, for whatever reason, the default for many new computers for the firewall is turned off. Well, turn it on and prevent computer hacking.

Go to the Control Panel and open the Internet Security program. Make sure there is a green button and the word "On" for the Firewall option.

There. Now the odds of somebody using your computer as their own virtual hard drive has been pretty well diminished. Yes, this does happen.
